Business Plan

Image
Dear Entrepreneur, Thank you for joining us once again. I believe we have been enjoying our gist so far. Now that we have decided on how to choose the side hustle (in preparation for setting out fully), the next thing is to write out how it will be run- your business plan. I have found out from experience that Nigerians have lofty business dreams but fail to be realistic. A business plan should be practical and not wholly based on 'faith'. Be truthful to yourself. Your projections and figures should not be ambiguous. Carry out your market analysis properly. Google is your friend, use it. Study market trends. If it is a new product, carry out surveys to know if it will be acceptable to your target market. If it is an existing product, what do you want to do differently? You want to run a business selling ‘akara’, it might be nice to host akara party in your house and intentionally sample the opinion of your guests on the taste of our akara. What is different a...

Side Hustle

Image
Dear Aspiring entrepreneur, In the past two weeks, we have been biting our teeth into the importance of having a side hustle. We looked at what lessons to learn from your current job and how your workplace can teach you important characteristics what would help build your business. If you are not learning what to do from your work place right now, you are learning what not to do. So see your current job as a learning center. This week let’s delve into identification of what to do. First determine what your side hustle will be. Will it be products or services? In identifying what to do, you must not be afraid to fail. The fear of failure can cripple even the greatest of minds. In determining your side hustle experiment a lot as this is also a journey to discovering the different aspects of yourself. Making up your mind about what the side hustle is constitute 40% of the walk. Your decision should be based on your area of strength. How do you know what you are good at? Check...

'Setting Out'

Image
Dear aspiring entrepreneur, Thank you for joining us again this week. We will continue our gist about 'setting out' on the journey of entrepreneurship. We established last week that being in paid employment is not a curse or a trap. Even while you are there, there is always something to learn. One of the best places to learn diligence and corporate governance is in paid employment.  A friend of mine who is one of the most hardworking young people I know around started out his career in a fast food and he was running a part time program in Lagos. Combining both laid the foundation for his work ethics today. You may believe you are not working in a place related to what your dream business is but trust me, there is always something to learn. Even at that, continue doing your research on your future project and plan your strategies ahead.  The best time to plan for projects is when you are under no pressure of time. All your creativity flows. While you are learnin...

Are you ready to set out as an entrepreneur?

Image
Dear aspiring entrepreneur, Happy New year to you all. Welcome to another year of fruitful and productive hustle. As we start out, I want you to answer these questions truthfully. Are you ready to set out as an entrepreneur and are you ready now? Being in paid employment and being on a salary is not a curse or enslavement. As a young man, you need to make a living for yourself while you work on your passion. Starting a business in Nigeria is not a walk in the park. Except your father is ote$ or uncle dangote, it is a road as rugged as the one to heaven. So setting out without any form of training, experience or support system will just turn you into a child of anger on social media. The easiest way to gain experience and be trained is to either work or volunteer as an intern with someone or an organisation. That way, you can learn and also get paid. Also, depending on where your passion lies, try to get a job in your area of interest. That will help you horn your skills. ...

My team-Our success 1

Today, I want to address both the employer and the employed. Our success rises and falls largely on the team we work with. make no mistake, you cannot work in isolation. You need a team to achieve your goals, they are the backbone of how well your business would strive . Have you ever experienced soliciting the services of a technically competent Naija company and the leader or members of the team are have this 'we have arrived attitude/you mee d us we don't need you' body language? All because the company has some small change o! It is said that a team can not rise above its leadership. i beg you learn how to manage a team before you become a team leader . If you have to invest time and money to learn team building, please do. It will save you a lot of headache. I have watched people who had amazing and effective teams destroy those teams based on ridiculous and foolish leadership styles. They say one style is 'divide and rule'. Hmmn. Shebi when...
